Dividing the Western Wall Plaza into two levels:
- The familiar and well-known upper level for visitors to the Western Wall.
- And beneath it – the lower level, which will expose visitors to the site’s archaeological layers from the First and Second Temple periods.
The work is being conducted through careful archaeological excavation to a depth of 2.7 meters, where relatively modern archaeological findings, as well as pilings, are being uncovered.
After documentation of the findings by the Israel Antiquities Authority, they are removed to allow further excavation to the required depth. Upon completion of the excavation, the ceiling of the lower level is poured, and the paving of the Western Wall Plaza at the upper level is restored.
The project has been underway since 2021, commissioned by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation.
